Once you download Handy Recovery, your further steps will be quite easy to do. Yet the following few tips will help you increase the chances for successful recovery of your files. In fact, we recommend reading these tips even before downloading any recovery software.

Data Recovery First Aid: 7 tips to increase your chances of success

Tip #1: If you recover files from a hard drive, try to use that drive as little as possible until you complete the recovery. The problem is that the system itself may use it in the background. If your lost files are very valuable, the best approach is to turn off the computer (do not shut down it normally, just unplug the power cable making it turn off immediately), physically unmount the drive, attach it to another system and proceed with the recovery.

Tip #2: If the above approach is not possible, try to immediately delete some large files from the drive. You can copy them to another drive temporary. This will create more free space on the drive you are working with. The probability of placing new data over your lost files will become smaller.

Tip #3: Avoid browsing the web, because your web browser saves cache files on the disk. Don't launch any unnecessary programs, because they can also use your disk. Don't restart your computer.

Tip #4: If you are recovering files from a memory card, do not insert it to your camera and make sure that the write protection switch is turned to the lock position.

Tip #5: Install recovery software to a different drive. Do not install it to the same drive with your lost files.

Tip #6: Never recover files to the same drive. Use another hard drive, a network folder or a flash drive.

Tip #7: After you recover your files, check that they are correct. Even the best recovery software cannot guarantee 100% results. If some parts of your files were overwritten - meaning that other data was saved to their location on your disk - after recovery they might contain invalid clusters. In some cases the partially recovered files can be fixes by special utilities.
